Dartmouth endowment reduces crypto holdings as market prices tumble

Institutional investors are closely watching the recent contraction in Dartmouth College’s endowment exposure to digital assets. The endowment’s position in three prominent exchange‑traded funds-Bitwise Solana staking ETF, Grayscale Ethereum staking ETF, and BlackRock iShares Bitcoin ETF-has fallen to roughly $12 million after a series of price declines across the cryptocurrency market.

When the endowment first allocated capital to these ETFs, the strategy was to capture the upside potential of blockchain networks while benefiting from the regulatory clarity that fund structures provide. Solana and Ethereum staking ETFs offered a way to earn yield on proof‑of‑stake protocols, while the Bitcoin ETF gave direct exposure to the flagship cryptocurrency without the custodial complexities of holding the asset itself.

Over the past twelve months, Bitcoin, Ethereum, and Solana have each experienced significant volatility. Bitcoin’s price slipped from its all‑time high of over $68,000 to a level near $26,000, a decline of more than 60 percent. Ethereum’s value dropped from a peak above $4,800 to roughly $1,600, while Solana fell from $250 to under $30. The cumulative effect of these price movements has eroded the market value of the three ETFs held by the endowment.

In response to the downturn, Dartmouth’s investment committee adjusted the portfolio to reflect a more conservative stance on crypto assets. The decision to trim exposure aligns with a broader trend among university endowments and pension funds that are recalibrating risk after the dramatic price swings of 2022 and 2023. By scaling back to a $12 million position, the endowment reduces its vulnerability to further market corrections while preserving a foothold in the evolving digital economy.

Analysts note that the move does not signal a complete retreat from blockchain investments. Instead, it suggests a shift toward selective exposure, possibly favoring projects with stronger fundamentals or diversified strategies such as decentralized finance platforms that generate on‑chain revenue. The endowment’s remaining crypto allocation continues to be overseen by a dedicated team that evaluates regulatory developments, tokenomics, and emerging use cases.

From a governance perspective, Dartmouth’s approach demonstrates the importance of dynamic asset allocation in a sector where price trajectories can be abrupt. The endowment’s public disclosures provide transparency for stakeholders and serve as a benchmark for other academic institutions navigating the intersection of traditional finance and decentralized technologies.

Looking ahead, the trajectory of institutional crypto exposure will hinge on market stabilization, clearer regulatory guidance, and the maturation of staking services. Should Bitcoin, Ethereum, and Solana regain upward momentum, the endowment may consider re‑investing in the same ETFs or exploring new vehicles that capture staking yields with lower volatility. For now, the reduction in holdings represents a prudent risk management decision amid an uncertain macro environment.
