Bitcoin’s second‑tier ecosystem has gained a new player as Second, a prominent Bitcoin development laboratory, officially launches Bark on the Bitcoin mainnet. Bark is a practical implementation of the Ark protocol, a layer‑2 solution designed to deliver self‑custodial Bitcoin payments without the operational headaches typically associated with the Lightning Network or on‑chain transactions.
Unlike Lightning, Ark eliminates the need for channel management and liquidity pre‑allocation. It achieves this by allowing a large cohort of users to share on‑chain UTXOs through trees of pre‑signed, off‑chain transactions. The result is a distributed fee structure that maintains individual self‑custody while dramatically reducing the complexity of everyday Bitcoin use. “We wanted to make it ridiculously easy for users to get started with self‑custodial bitcoin, hold it, and spend it, without surprise fees, and without having to manage channels or liquidity,” CEO Steven Roose explained in a recent announcement.
The launch comes complete with a robust developer toolkit – the Bark SDK – written in Rust and offering bindings for Kotlin, Swift, React Native, Flutter, Go, Python, and WebAssembly. For server‑side integration, Second has also released Barkd, a standalone wallet daemon that exposes a REST interface with an OpenAPI specification. These tools lower the barrier for developers to embed self‑custodial Bitcoin functionality into their applications.
Several applications are already live on mainnet, showcasing Bark’s versatility. Noah, a full‑stack mobile Ark wallet, couples a React Native front end with a Rust back end. Arke is a design‑driven native iOS wallet that leverages open‑source UX principles from bitcoin.design. Satsigner brings Sparrow‑style UTXO management and multisig workflows to mobile users. Bark Wallet, an Umbrel app, supports Ark, Lightning, and on‑chain payments. Additionally, a BTCPay Server plugin, also developed by Second, enables merchants to process self‑custodial Lightning payments without the need to open channels or manage liquidity.
Second’s move into the layer‑2 space arrives amid intense competition, with protocols such as Ark Labs’ Arkade and state‑chain‑based solutions vying to close the gap between self‑custody and user experience. The company has recently raised $5.1 million from private investors and boasts a team of 11, including former Blockstream engineers, underscoring its technical depth.
To celebrate the launch, Second will host a live AMA on Stacker News on June 9 at 10:00 AM EST, inviting the community to explore the capabilities of Bark and its potential to transform Bitcoin usability.
